Wearable trainingless Brain Computer Interfaces in Augmented Reality-based Health 4.0

Abstract:

Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) is a challenging research topic, involving more than 7000 institutions according to Clarivate Analytics (Web of Science), and a very competitive research area. The combination of BCI with Augmented Reality can provide the solution to hands-free operations to several advanced clinical applications (surgery, training, diagnostics, and telemedicine): BCI is capable of interpreting human intentions by suitably processing electroencephalography data. To this aim, at University of Naples Federico II, a high-wearable instrument for BCI, based on steady-state visual evoked potentials, and conceived with low-cost, off-the-shelf components, has been developed.

In this talk, most interesting results of this technological research effort, as well as its further recent developments on natural potential exploitation, are reviewed. In particular, after a short survey on research at University of Naples Federico II in cooperation with CERN, the presentation focuses mainly on state-of-the-art research on a wearable BCI-based monitoring system for health care applications in the framework of Health 4.0. Research applications for engagement, attention, and stress monitoring, as well as for motor imagery assessment, autism, and ADHD rehabilitation are illustrated. A rescue case study at CERN, for robotic inspection in hazardous sites, is also reported.
